One of America’s major airlines Delta Air Lines Inc. (Delta) was founded in May 1924 in Macon Georgia. Its headquarters and largest hub are located at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Originally created as Huff-Daland Dusters Incorporated undertaking operations for aerial crop dusting it was the initial crop duster deployed to tackle the boll weevil in 1925 and this plane is now home in the Southern Museum of Flight. After the company moved to Monroe, Louisiana in 1925, one the original directors purchased it in 1928 and renamed it Delta Air Service with passenger carriage commencing in June 1929. Today the Delta services more than 325 travel destinations.
With ten domestic hubs and three international hubs Delta transports more passengers than any other airline from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, Minneapolis-St Paul, New York JFK and LaGuardia and Salt Lake City airports.
Delta has a mixed fleet of Airbus, Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed with over 800 aircraft as well as subsidiary airlines some of which include Virgin Atlantic, Endeavour Air and Compass Airlines.

Check-In – Domestic Travel
The recommended time to be at the airport is 75 minutes prior to departure and passengers must be checked in at least 30 minutes before scheduled departure and be at the boarding gate at least 15 minutes before take-off. Check-in times vary between States but for passengers with baggage it is between 45 to 60 minutes while passengers with only carry-on baggage have between 30 and 45 minutes. Delta Shuttle passengers with only carry-on baggage have between 15 and 30 minutes while those with checked baggage have 30 minutes with passengers needing to be at the boarding gate 5 minutes before departure.
Check-In – International Travel
Three hours is the recommended time to be at the airport and passengers must be checked-in within 60 minutes of their flights departure and be at the boarding gate within 45 minutes to take-off. Certain international cities require earlier check-in times so check online to ensure that you don’t forfeit your flight due to late arrival for check-in and have the correct necessary documentation required.
Passengers are permitted one carry-on bag and one personal item for free provided they fit into the overhead compartment or underneath the seat in front of you. Personal items may consist of a briefcase, purse, diaper bag, camera or laptop or an item similar or smaller in size to those listed above. Additionally for free and not considered as a personal item is a coat or umbrella, drink or food purchased once youve cleared security, duty-free items and special articles such as child restraint seats, strollers or assistive devices. Your carry-on baggage must easily fit into the Carry-on Baggage Check (56x35x23cm) and cannot exceed 114cm in width, height and length including handles and wheels with the exception of small musical instruments that do fit into the overhead compartments or available under-seat space. Carry-on baggage has no maximum weight restrictions, except for Singapore – Changi International Airport at 7kgs, South Korea – Incheon International Airport at 10kg, China – Beijing Capital International Airport and Pudong International Airport also at 10kg.
Passengers taking Delta connection flights with 50 seats or less may only take one personal item onboard that must fit securely under the seat in front.
Paying for checked baggage can be done within 24 hours of departure online allowing you when arriving at the airport to simply drop off your checked baggage into the nearest Baggage Drop marked in red signage or available within 6 hours of departure is the Curb-side Check-in Station. Alternatively you can check your bags at an airport kiosk or ticket counter. Checked baggage should weigh no more than 23kg and not exceed 157cm in width, length and height.
Passengers should check online for comprehensive check-in baggage allowances and costs for extra baggage as prices vary between the classes and routes. If part of the United States Military check online for special exceptions.
Passengers travelling with Delta Airlines on long-haul flights can expect personalised service and a superior dining experience that differs between transcontinental, transpacific, South America and Mexico flights, premium entertainment and 180-degree flat bed seating. Additionally guests can request an expedited meal service and customise their meal should they require Kosher, gluten-free or meals suitable for diabetics. Delta caters for children travelling alone but minors aged four years and younger must travel with a companion 18 years or older. Minors aged from five to seven years may only travel on non-stop flights, while those aged from eight to 14 years may travel on non-stop and connecting flights only including those aged 15 to 17 years. To make a reservation for an unaccompanied minor contact the Reservations office on 800-221-1212 to ensure all documentation is correct. It is recommended to keep carry-on baggage at a minimum, attach an ID and contact information to carry-on and checked baggage. Ensure you pack books, games and a meal for your minor.
Passengers travelling on Delta Airlines, Delta Connection or Delta Shuttle can easily change their tickets on the website under My Trips by providing their confirmation or credit card number. Alternatively passengers can contact reservations to make the necessary changes.
When a ticket has been changed the airlines automated process system calculates the best cost-effective way to apply the tickets remaining value to your new itinerary. Travel taking place between Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands requires tickets to be reissued with travel being completed within one year of the original date of issue. For all other travel, tickets are valid for one year but will need to be reissued with completion of travel within one year from the original date of issue.
