History of the Airport in Cape Town

Formerly known as Fisantekraal, the Cape Winelands Airport was built back in 1943 as a training base for the South African Air Force during the Second World War. The airport currently has four of its original runways located on the sizeable 150-hectare property.

Cape Winelands Airport was owned by the local municipality in the ‘60s, but ownership changed hands in 1993. Then, in 2021, Rob Hersov announced his keen interest in purchasing the airport and turning it into a world-class airfield secondary to CT International Airport.

Hersov now co-owns the airport with Nick Ferguson, the businessman behind the River Club creative group. River Club has been transforming Cape Town spaces for years now, for example, the Woodstock Exchange, the Old Biscuit Mill, and the apartment block WEX Living in Woodstock. The group is also responsible for South Africa’s original boutique hotel, Daddy Long Legs.

The new airport is set to rival the Cape Town Airport, primarily aimed at tourists and travellers in and around the Northern Suburbs.

Interestingly, Rob Hersov is an ex-shareholder of Air Berlin and a giant South African entrepreneur. Hersov is a private investor and also holds the position of Chief Executive and Chairman of Invest Africa. With an impressive track record – including ties to Rupert Murdoch and Johann Rupert – few can think of a more qualified business tycoon than Hersov to rejuvenate Fisantekraal.

According to an interview with Biznews, Hersov plans to build “the Lanseria Airport of Cape Town,” referring to the small Lanseria airport near Johannesburg. This is by no means Hersov’s first foray into aviation either. The South African billionaire founded Marquis Jet Europe, which he sold to Warren Buffet.

While the Cape Winelands Airport is a low-traffic airfield for the moment, investors have big plans for it to compete with the Cape Town International Airport in the commercial space. For residents of the Northern Suburbs and tourists travelling outside of the major city of Cape Town, the Cape Winelands Airport is an ideal stop-over destination.

At the moment, the airport is operating as a general airfield, also providing private aircraft services and aviation training. In the short-term, the space will cater to tour operators, private aircraft operators, and charters. It will be primarily for individuals who find Cape Town Airport to be too big.

It’s still early days for the new airfield, but investors are confident in the potential of the space and its long-term growth. The idea is to make a home for smaller airline companies who don’t want to compete with the big names found at Cape Town International.

The City of Cape Town hasn’t yet received an application for expansion for the airport. However, a pre-submission meeting was scheduled for March 2021.

Western Cape Property Development Forum chairperson Deon van Zyl said the Durbanville community is cautiously excited about what the investment could mean for the town.

He said in an interview with IOL, “In particular, because of its location close to the Winelands, it would deliver added economic value to important Western Cape nodes such as Paarl and Wellington, and all along the West Coast.”

The Cape Winelands Airport is also home to the Cape Town Flight Training Centre (CTFTC), an aviation school. The new CPT airport also offers fuel supply to the local aviation community and is home to two decommissioned runways used as local film sets.
