Cape Town Airport, known also as Cape Town International Airport, represents the second largest airport within the country of South Africa, after O.R. Tambo Airport, near Johannesburg. Cape Town International Airport is Africa’s most acclaimed airport having won numerous awards. As the whole of Africa’s third largest airport it sees over 8 million travellers each year with over 50 percent of the country’s air passengers passing through the airport.

This airport in Cape Town is a major tourism gateway, and experiences millions of international as well as domestic visitors arriving and departing annually. It’s expected to have around 14 million travellers during the year 2015, which would make it the third busiest airport in Africa.

Cape Town Airport Parking

 

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is the owner of the public parking facilities but Katanga Parking Services is contracted to manage parking facilities at the airport. Their services additionally include valet services.

The public parking areas comprise two parkades, namely P1 Parkade and P2 Parkade 2. Both parkades are located on either side of the Transport Plaza.

P1 is located at the north of the terminal building and comprises five parking levels with 4050 parking bays, 8 escalators and 6 elevators plus 14 bays on each floor dedicated to disabled persons.

 

P1 Parkade Pick-Up – Ground Floor:

This parkade has a five-star rating and affords the convenience of a free 30-minute period for passengers being collected. Additionally, there is available parking for persons with disabilities located in close proximity to the entrance lobby. Long Stay specifically for physically challenged person is also situated on this floor with user-friendly wheelchair pay-stations conveniently situated in the lobby.

P2 is situated to the south with five levels comprising 1,749 parking bays and four elevators. Persons with restricted mobility that require a wheelchair or special access to the terminal should contact the Landside hotline number on 021935 3737.

P3 and P4 provide shaded parking and are situated on either side of the centralised car hire facility, easily assessable via the pedestrian subways. The shaded parking areas comprise 1,600 parking bays inclusive of P5, for Long Stay parking. Long Stay parking is designed for users parking for 5 days or longer with 189 bays and operated on a strictly first-come-first-served basis.

 

Long Stay Parking for Special Needs Passengers

 

The Long Stay parking option on the ground floor of P1 was introduced by the airport in conjunction with the QuadPara Association of SA (QASA) specifically for Special Needs Passengers (SNP) ensuring they too have access to long stay parking thats located close to the terminal affording easier access.

Passengers wanting to utilise this facility should contact Kantanga Parking Management on 021 936 3612/3 or ACSAs Landside Hotline on 021 935 3737 where after a prepaid access card will be issued and all users need do is upload the card with money. Rates for parking are calculated the same as those for Long
Stay parking in P5.

Each parking facility is equipped with the best and latest CCTV cameras and both parkades provide displays showing the amount of parking bays available.

Payments for parking can only be made at parking payment units conveniently placed on the ground floor of the parkade buildings and for shaded parking, at the landings. Payments can be made with cash, major credit cards and all debit cards including the latest Chip n Pin facility. Should users encounter any problems, parking attendants are available to assist.

Travel Tips

 

Cape Town International provides a complete functional transfer/transit service to enable passengers taking regional or international connecting flights.

Procedures applicable for passengers from an aerobridge stand (passenger loading bridge) are:

  • Follow directional signage stating International Transfers.
  • Appropriate airline staff will escort passengers through the route and process.
  • Boarding passes already issued must be retained for the continuation of the journey.
  • Should no boarding pass have been issued, it can be printed at the transit/transfer facility by the airline youre flying with.
  • Passengers hand luggage may be checked at the transfer facility by ACSAs security officers or custom officials.
  • All visa restricted passport holders will need a Transit visa to transit South African airports, regardless of the length of transit.
  • For boarding follow the directional displays to the international lounge.
  • Allow a minimum connecting time of one hour to oversee all procedures.

Procedures applicable for passengers from a non-aerobridge stand:

  • Airline personnel are required to direct passengers to the transfer/transit facilities.
  • Passengers transferring to the international arrivals immigration processing area must first take the steps or lift towards the transit facility.
  • Thereafter passenger must follow the directional displays that indicate International Transfers.
  • For journey continuation, issued boarding passes must be retained.
  • If no boarding pass has been issued it may be printed at the transit/transfer facility by the airline the passenger is flying with.
  • Cabin luggage checks may take place at the transfer facility by airport officials or customs.
  • All visa restricted passport holders will need a Transit visa to transit South African airports, regardless of the length of transit.
  • For boarding follow the directional displays to the international departure lounge.
  • Allow a minimum connecting time of one hour to oversee all procedures.

 

Cape Town Arrivals Passengers:

Passengers arriving enter on the ground floor of the Central Terminal Building with both domestic and international arrivals having walkways that link directly to the ground floor of the Central Terminal Building. Both international and domestic arrival areas have a variety of restaurants available for greeters waiting on arriving passengers.

 

Car Hire Cape Town

Note that the route for returning a hired vehicle has changed. When returning your vehicle continue with the Airport Approach Road once you’ve turned off the N2 and proceed onto Ring Road remaining in the far right lane as Ring Road leads to Central Boulevard that has a turn-off to the right leading to rental vehicle facilities.

Special Needs Passengers:
Travellers flying with mobility restrictions that require special access should contact the Landside Hotline at +27 (0) 21 935 3737 as well as informing the airline they’re flying with 48 hours prior to departure.

 

Important Information:

  • Arrive at the airport in good time to avoid delays. For international flights arrive at least 2½ hours before flight departure and for domestic flights, at least 1½ hours before departure.
  • Never leave any baggage or items unattended and report any unattended baggage you notice to the nearest airport representative or the South African Police.
  • The Drop and Go facility is situated on the elevated roadway where all drop-offs for departures are facilitated.
  • Only smoke in designated smoking areas.
  • Taking photographs of the security check or any areas on the airside is prohibited.
  • Security Threats: Passengers and airport visitors are encouraged not to say any words that may be considered as threats. Threats are taken seriously by Aviation Security and people are urged not to joke about carrying explosives in their luggage. Should anyone make such a statement, they risk being arrested and charged under the Civil Aviation Act.
  • Baggage Allowance: Passengers are encouraged to stick to their airlines baggage restrictions, to avoid delays.

Transportation to and from CPT Airport

Metered Taxis:
Accredited by Cape Town International is Touchdown Taxi Association. They can be contacted on +27 (0) 83 652 0786 to pre-book a taxi.

My Citi Bus:
My Citi Bus service operates an airport shuttle that operates between the Civic Centre in the city located on Hertzog Boulevard and the airport. Outside of peak hour traffic, the journey takes around 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the Civic Centre and Airport Station. For additional information contact the city’s Transport Information Centre toll-free on 0800 656 463 (South Africa only).

Car Rentals:
Located at the airport are 9 car rental agencies that are located in front of the Transport Plaza and Central Terminal Building. Access is gained by two pedestrian subways located on either side of the terminal building, eliminating pedestrians having to cross busy roads for access. These subways, besides affording access to the car rental providers, also provide access to the shaded parking areas.
